WordPress Beta

When the next version of WordPress is feature complete, it moves into beta. All the listed features have been added, but have not yet been tested for bugs, security, stability, speed or user interface.

This comes after Alpha and is the first point in the development process that the new version is announced. This is to invite beta testers to take part in looking for any issues. Once completed, the first Release Candidate is achieved.

WordPress Foundation

The WordPress Foundation is a charity. It owns the copyright to “WordPress”, “WordCamp” and the “W” logo. Their goal is to keep it free and to spread the word.

WordPress Release Candidate

A WordPress release candidate (RC) is a beta version with potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge.

After all the bugs have been squashed, features have been polished and any issues dealt with, the next version of WordPress moves from Beta into Release Candidate. There may be a few minor items addressed at this point, before rapidly being fully released.
